Queen Creek Joint Answers

Straight answers to common arthritis questions

This page answers the joint questions people ask most. Your health and past joint trouble can still change an answer.

Use these answers to choose what to do next. If the joint is hot, badly swollen, or suddenly won't hold you, get medical help now.

What vitamins help with arthritis pain?

No vitamin has shown broad, reliable arthritis relief. Vitamin D still matters if your doctor finds you're low, but taking extra hasn't eased knee soreness in the main study cited here.

Do glucosamine and chondroitin actually work?

Most people don't get a clear, useful change from them. If you try one, pick the task you want to improve and stop paying for it when that task doesn't get easier.

Is walking good for knees with arthritis?

Usually, yes, if you aren't more sore later or the next morning. Start with a short walk, check the knee next morning, and add time slowly.

What foods should you avoid if you have arthritis?

There isn't one forbidden-food list for every arthritic joint. Choose food that supports your whole health, and ask a doctor or dietitian for help if medicines, kidney trouble, or heart trouble narrow your choices.

Does weather affect arthritis pain?

Some people notice weather changes, but studies haven't shown a steady link with sudden knee soreness. Track sleep and walking too, since heat can change both and make weather seem like the cause.

  1. A BMJ network meta-analysis of 10 large trials in 3,803 patients found that compared with placebo the difference in pain intensity on a 10 cm visual analogue scale was -0.4 cm for glucosamine, -0.3 cm for chondroitin and -0.5 cm for the combination - none crossing the pre-specified minimal clinically important difference of -0.9 cm. Industry-independent trials showed smaller effects than commercially funded ones (P=0.02 for interaction).

  2. In a 70-participant randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial, Curcuma longa extract improved VAS knee pain versus placebo by -9.1 mm (95% CI -17.8 to -0.4, P=0.039) and WOMAC pain by -47.2 mm, but did NOT change effusion-synovitis volume on MRI or cartilage composition. The authors flag modest sample size and 12-week duration as limitations.

  3. A two-year randomized placebo-controlled trial in 146 participants with symptomatic knee OA raised serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D by a mean 16.1 ng/mL with cholecalciferol 2000 IU/day, testing whether vitamin D supplementation reduces symptom and structural progression of knee osteoarthritis.

  4. A web-based case-crossover study of 345 people with symptomatic radiographic knee OA (171 with at least one flare, 1,425 observations) found NO apparent association between temperature, relative humidity, air pressure or precipitation and the risk of knee pain exacerbation - directly contradicting the near-universal patient belief that weather drives flares.

  5. In 1,212 Osteoarthritis Initiative participants aged 50+ with knee OA, those who walked for exercise had a LOWER likelihood of developing new frequent knee pain than non-walkers (odds ratio 0.6, 95% CI 0.4-0.8), and less progression of medial joint space narrowing - evidence against the belief that walking wears the joint out faster.

  6. A meta-analysis of nine randomized trials (898 participants) found dietary interventions improved osteoarthritis pain (SMD -0.67, 95% CI -1.01 to -0.34) and physical function (SMD -0.62). The benefit was concentrated in REDUCED-ENERGY diets (pain SMD -0.85); the Mediterranean diet subgroup did NOT significantly change pain (SMD -0.27, 95% CI -1.14 to 0.60, P=0.54).

  7. FDA states verbatim that stem cell products, stromal vascular fraction (adipose-derived), umbilical cord blood, Wharton's jelly, amniotic fluid and exosome products have NOT been approved 'for the treatment of any orthopedic condition, such as osteoarthritis, tendonitis, disc disease, tennis elbow, back pain, hip pain, knee pain, neck pain, or shoulder pain.' The only FDA-approved stem cell products in the United States are blood-forming (hematopoietic progenitor) cells derived from umbilical cord blood, approved only for disorders of blood production, and there are currently NO FDA-approved exosome products.
